Transport

The city of Melbourne features an extensive public transport network, meaning that getting around the city couldn’t be easier. From buses to trains to trams, even for conference delegates who have never had the luxury of visiting Melbourne before, navigating the city and the conference venue will be a breeze.

Transport to Melbourne CBD from the Airport

If you are arriving from overseas or interstate and are flying to Melbourne, you can catch the Skybus from Tullamarine Airport to Southern Cross Station, which is in the CBD. From Southern Cross Station, you will have easy access to the rest of Melbourne via train, tram, taxi or bus. A ticket is $19.75 for one way, and $39 for a return ticket, which is about the third of a price of a taxi.

Alternatively, there are several taxi ranks and Uber pick-up spots located around the airport.

Getting to RMIT

The central location of RMIT makes it a breeze to get to and its colourful façade means that it’s pretty much impossible to miss. There are a range of public transport options that will quickly and easily get you to LMT2023, including:

  • Train: Melbourne Central is the closest train station to RMIT’s City Campus. This station is part of the City Loop, which means that it can be easily reached from any station in Melbourne. Just make sure that when you get to Flinders’ Street Station that you change to a City Loop train.
  • Tram: Pretty much all north-south Yarra Trams run along Swanston Street (routes 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 16, 64, 67 and 72). If you are travelling along Elizabteh Street services (route 19, 57 and 59), simply get off at Melbourne Central and walk one block to Swanston Street. For routes that travel east-west along Flinders Street (rotes 48, 70 and 75), Collins Street (routes 12 and 109) or Bourke Street (routes 86 and 96) simply get off at Swanston Street and take a connecting tram.
  • Car: There is no on-site parking available at the venue, so it is not recommended that you drive. However, if you prefer to travel by car, there are plenty of taxi ranks and Ubers located around the city.

Myki

When you arrive in Melbourne, one of the first things you should do is purchase a Myki card. These can be bought at some train stations and topped up at all of them, as well as some tram stations. Additionally, they can be bought and topped up at 7-Eleven and many convenience stores. Your Myki card will be your ticket for all buses, trams and trains. Not tapping on can cost you a fine of nearly $250, so make sure to keep your Myki topped up and to tap on every time.
